Severe Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD) leaves a patient with one leg significantly shorter than the other.

 

Therefore, a device must address the individual’s anatomy and mobility needs, but not at the expense of the patient appearance, style, footwear and self-image. Ludada and Associates Orthopaedic Services LAOS has developed a new custom made PFFD Prosthesis to bring those priorities into one patient-centred design. Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD) presents different from one patient to the other.

 

As a result, our service begins with an individual assessment of your specific condition and evaluation of your current device. To understand what works, what causes difficulty, and your desired outcomes. The suitability design of any prosthesis can only be determined after conducting the initial assessment.

 

The initial consultation fee is R500, and the quotation will follow after the assessment.

1Is PFFD Prosthesis suitable for everyone with PFFD condition.
No single device suits every presentation of PFFD, as each PFFD is different from one person to the other. Anatomy, joint function, limb-length difference, current mobility and personal goals all affect the recommendation. Only after the initial consultation we can advise on suitability.
2Can I wear ordinary shoes with it?
Yes, if you pass the initial assessment.
3Can I replace my current calliper or Orthoprosthesis with it?
You can replace your device with a PFFD prosthesis provided your assessment results meet the minimum requirements for PFFD.
4Is the PFFD Prosthesis scientifically proven to work better?
No. No. The published single-patient audit is a proof of concept. Objective testing and research involving more patients are needed before comparative claims can be made.
5Do medical schemes or other medical insurer fund the PFFD Prosthesis?
At this stage, the PFFD Prosthesis has not been registered with medical schemes or other medical insurances. We currently offering it on a cash-payment basis only.
6What is the success rate of the PFFD Prosthesis
Of the 7 cases identified, only 3 have been fitted with 100% adoption of the device. This is a good proof of concept for further scientific research.
